“Landfill Detour”
MA Manufacturing Recycler taking Initiative
On Carpet Disposal Agreement
DATELINE: TAUNTON, MA, March 11, 2002…SelecTech, an innovative manufacturing recycler based in Taunton, MA, is poised to become a key player in developing and delivering solutions in conjunction with the recently enacted Memorandum of Understanding for Carpet Stewardship, endorsed by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs.
This model agreement, first of it’s kind in the nation, represents a voluntary coalition between the carpet industry, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, government, and non governmental organizations, to divert 40% of waste carpet from landfills by 2012.
Viewing Waste Carpet as a Resource
SelecTech is currently testing new applications of its propriety closed loop process to generate carpeting and flooring products utilizing some of the estimated 4.7 billion pounds of waste carpeting that will be generated in this country in 2002.
Not only does SelecTech possess the technology for the cost effective conversion of low value scrap into a new product, but it also possesses the distribution network to successfully market and sell the product. This capability meshes with the objectives of the Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE), a third party organization funded by the carpet industry, that will assist in the achievement of the goals set out in the memorandum, including the identification of viable markets for post consumer carpet.
Taking the Lead
Prior to the signing of the Carpet Stewardship memorandum in January, SelecTech had already entered into a successful alliance with Dupont Flooring Systems to develop a new product from waste carpet. SelecTech converts Dupont’s un-recyclable waste carpet into new, patent pending, industrial floor tiles, marketed and sold through SelecTech’s Industrial Flooring product line, SelecTile™.
In addition to generating waste carpet solutions, SelecTech also manufactures additional high-quality products converted from previously valueless plastic feedstock. These include lawn and garden products such as planters and landscape timbers, as well as traffic control products incorporating lighter weight parking stops and speed bumps.
The Recycling Wave of the Future
SelecTech, Inc., a $3 million recycling company that uses approximately 4 million pounds of scrap plastic annually, helps companies determine if their plastic waste is recyclable—then converts it to high-quality, high-value products for resale.
SelecTech strives to provide consumers with the safest and most durable products available. The company’s line of recycled products includes SelecTimber™ for landscapes and playgrounds, SelecStops™ and SelecBumps™ traffic control products, in addition to their own line of commercial and industrial flooring, SelecTile™. By using 100% recycled plastic in the products, there are no toxic additives (such as arsenic which is found in pressure treated lumber) and a significant amount of plastic waste in landfills is eliminated. SelecTech utilizes an injection molding manufacturing process, which enables the company to produce three-dimensional shapes and a wide variety of products.
Founded in 1994, SelecTech Inc. is a recycling solutions provider and manufacturer of high-quality products made from undesirable plastic waste. Utilizing high-tech innovations that effectively reduce the amount of plastic waste in landfills by efficient reprocessing, SelecTech converts a negative to a positive. In addition to SelecTimber, SelecTech supplies a range of other high-quality, recycled content products including industrial flooring and outdoor garden and yard furnishings. SelecTech is committed to delivering a high degree of satisfaction to the end-users of their products, and they are a premier provider of innovative, tangible solutions to companies that have problems disposing of the plastic waste they generate or collect.
